Project overview
The Swan River Crossing Project, led by the Fremantle Bridge Alliance comprising of Laing O’Rourke, Arup and WSP focused on the replacement of the bridge foundations and the construction of a new bridge approach. The key challenge was ensuring the stability of the site while constructing a new infrastructure that met modern engineering standards.
Scope of work
Design
- 4m, 5m and 6m retaining structures using 9m sheet piles
Works
- Temporary works adjacent to traffic along the bridge approaches to maximise the lane opening duration of the project before it needed to be closed and replaced
- Sheet pile installation of structural walls with grout anchors
- King post / soldier pile and steel plate installation
- Installation of permanent galvanised post and galvanised plate which will form part of the future bridge abutment structure
- Installation of edge protection
Challenges
- Ground conditions, particularly the presence of limestone required predrilling
- Works adjacent to Water Corporation assets which required additional integrity surveillance via vibration monitoring
- Limited room to undertake works in 4 isolated areas with large, steep embankments adjacent to the works zone
Outcome
The project resulted in a robust and secure foundation for the new bridge approach, ensuring that the new bridge was built on a solid and stable base. The permanent retaining system provides long-term stability and improved the safety of the structure, allowing for a smooth transition between the old and new infrastructure.
